Stay focused with StayFocusd

Do you think you spend too much time on social networking sites? Reddit, perhaps? If you think your productivity has taken a dive because of websites you visit too often, StayFocusd is for you.

StayFocusd is a chrome extension which lets you block and set time-limit on websites. After the time-limit has expired, you can no-longer visit the website. It redirects you to stayfocusd.com which reminds you of your work. It is a great tool to boost productivity at work.

StayFocusd is intelligent enough to count-down only when tabs with blocked sites are in focus. It has wide array of options including white lists, ability to block just certain part of a website. You can also block sites for few hours. Once the time expires, you cannot reset the time until next day. Developers have taken enough care to not leave a loophole which would allow you to visit the blocked sites after your time has expired.

However, if one is really dedicated, he can just disable the extension to regain access to the blocked website.

To prevent yourself from cheating, you can follow the following steps after which you can no longer disable StayFocusd:

  • Add every possible website you can think of to your block list (and white list)
  • Add chrome://extensions to your block list.
  • Enable incognito mode.
  • Change the notification settings so you’re not warned when block is imminent (I have a warning at 15 of 30 minutes, that’s it.)
  • Hide the button.

Ofcourse, you can just use another browser or make another profile and use the browser but if you’re doing so, you probably need more than an extension to control yourself.

StayFocusd personally has given a huge boost to my productivity and I recommend it to all the social networking addicts.

i came up with the same loophole killer after many months of worming my way of finding ways around stayfocusd. it has worked quite well for the past couple of weeks, however today i discovered that the extension was not blocking chrome://extensions anymore. it’s still on the blocked list, but i can access it just fine. any one else experiencing the same thing?

It still works for me. No clue why chrome://extensions is not getting blocked for you.

I figured out my problem, it wasn’t working while i was in nuclear mode. I guess i’ll just have to live without the nuclear option.

Ahh yes, nuclear mode ignores chrome://extensions
